Reading

The expectations for grade 11 reading is being able to read for meaning, recognizing form and style, reading fluently and reflecting on our strengths and weaknesses as readers. I think that personally I am strong reader. During lit-circles my group read The Kite Runner . I was able to read for meaning in my novel. In this particular novel there was tons of different meanings and different styles.

Although what I struggled with was fully understanding the meanings. I could easily find the symbols and their meanings but never elaborated enough. So throughout the year I tried to improve my critical thinking. And once we read the play Macbeth, we focused a lot on symbols and their meanings. I really improved. When I had to do a poster on symbolism in Macbeth, I was able to demonstrate that I understood the deeper meanings.

"The dark forest, the thunder and lightning storm, the gloominess of the witch’s cave all symbolize that bad things are going to happen, such as the prophecies. The prophecies represent evil in the witches and foreshadow what Macbeth will do."

"Lady Macbeth sleepwalking at night symbolizes the darkness in her mind and the guilt of the murders. When she assisted in the murder of the king she washed the blood off her hands immediately after as if it were no big deal. Now she can’t be rid of the blood."

While observing the media presentation of Macbeth it helped me understand the text while I read it and therefore spot the hidden meanings, symbolism and read fluently. And when I didn't understand something I knew that was where I needed the improvement.
